Community Resources & Service Center Inc.
Several decades ago, Rev. Dr. Ralph Lankler and Mr. John Brown met, as so many people still do, at the Village of Pawling U.S. Post Office. They would talk about the need for a resource place, but always ended up facing the question, what are we going to do about it? That particular day, someone came into the Post Office from the Lutheran Church, remarking that his copier had broken down, and suggested to Mr. Brown and Dr. Lankler that wouldn't it be great if we could establish a place for all six churches to have their printing done?! At that time, the Town Supervisor arrived, acknowledged he had just the place, the basement of the Town Hall, which he would be willing to rent for $50.00 a month. Dr. Lankler and Mr. Brown shared the rent from 1976 through the mid-eighties. Mr. Brown became the first director of the facility.

Initially, classes were offered in yoga, needlepoint and embroidery (taught by a man), and it became the beehive of activity which continues today.

The primary purposes of the Community Resources & Service Center, Inc. are: To be the instrument for the churches of the community to carry out social ministry aiding the people of the community who are in need, to be a clearing house and referral service in order that the resources of both government and private agencies may be drawn upon by the people who need them and to provide for the printing, mailing and distribution of materials used in the work of churches of the Pawling community.

The Community Resources & Service Center, Inc. benefits families as well as individuals in crisis situations and currently is located in the Carriage House on the historic John Kane property on Route 22. The Center is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization which charges no fees for any of its services, relying entirely on charitable gifts to fund the programs and services that benefit hundreds of local residents each year.

Where in the world would you go for a source that would supply needy persons with the equivalent of 24,000 meals, the loan of medical equipment like hospital beds, wheel chairs, walkers etc.? Who would you call to drive you to a medical facility or who would you ask for help in completing everything from income tax forms to your medical insurance forms? And, what about a volunteer telephone service that would communicate regularly with people who live alone, or people who need counseling services? Only our Pawling Community Resources & Service Center fulfills all these challenges.

The Community Resources & Service Center, Inc. is an example of what makes community -- truly a coming together for the highest good -- the love of God and neighbor. It brings people of all religions the opportunity to contribute services or receive services as heir personal needs ebb and flow through the years. This spirit of community is ecumenically represented by Pawling's six churches their monthly meeting of clergy and described by Rev. Msgr. Win. L. Doty some years ago, as an "atmosphere of strong faith and ardent Christian love and zeal."
